One of the main ways that online casinos spread the word of their services and promotions is through affiliates. Affiliates are people who provide value for players so that they will be prepared with the information that they need to boost their chances of winning when they play in online casino. Now, New Jersey casino affiliates have been pulled into a legal battle that was basically inevitable for recommending sites that are not licensed by the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement. This is just another step in the process of having online gambling regulation start up on the state level, and it probably won’t be the first case of its kind during this process.
Why New Jersey Casino Affiliates Are Targeted
The general idea is that certain companies have been licensed for players in New Jersey, and this helps to protect the players who play there by making sure that they are legitimate businesses who are following all of the necessary precautions to protect players and their funds. If an affiliate promotes sites that have not been through this licensing process, then they don’t know for sure that players will be protected.
At least that’s what they say. What’s really happening is that they want to limit competition for the sites that are generating revenue for players, so they’re leaning on popular affiliate sites that players can access inside of the state of New Jersey, and this likely includes plenty of sites that aren’t even based out of New Jersey in the first place.
The Legal Gray Area
CEO of onlinecasinolistings had this to say: “There is no true legal gray area anymore regarding online gambling in the United States on a federal level. The DOJ stated very clearly that online sports betting is the only type of Internet-based gambling that’s banned on the federal level. This means that the battle between the states and casino affiliates is just starting up, and it will be interesting to see which direction this is taken in.”
